SURAT: The cashier at a luxury hotel near Magdalla Cross Roads was murdered and his body was found locked in a bag in the basement of the resort on Monday.
It is suspected that cashier Jivan Raut, from Odisha, was killed with the intention of looting when he used to go to the bank to deposit money. The hotel is managed by Orange Megastructure LLP.
Police arrested Viren alias Wahid Saini (30), the hotel’s assistant housekeeping manager for his alleged involvement in the looting and murder.
Police found Rs 4.50 lakh in cash in Saini’s desk drawer. “After killing Raut, the accused went to his room and washed the bloodstained clothes. He took a bath but there were some bloodstains on his shoe which he did not remove. He is became the prime suspect as soon as the cops noticed the stains,” said AP Somaiya, police inspector, Dumas.
Cops are still unclear as to whether anyone else was involved in the crime, but are trying to gather details based on a preliminary investigation. Raut’s body was found piled up in a bag used to wrap garbage. His throat was slit with a box cutter. The bag was kept in the storage room used for laundry and bath products in the basement of the hotel.
It is suspected that Raut was attacked in the basement as he left with money to deposit in the bank. A hotel staff member who visited the storage room noticed the bag and alerted his colleagues. Later, the hotel management called the police.
Police suspect the deceased was killed between 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. The accused knew Raut’s routine and that he used to go to the bank with cash in a shoulder bag. The police suspect the involvement of another person, but the identity of the accused is not yet clear.
