Popular Stafford Twp, NJ Take Out Place decides to close
The truth is, I’ve never eaten at Cluck ‘n Crabs, a family-run take-out restaurant located at Mill Creek Plaza just off Rt. 72 in the Manahawkin neighborhood of Beach Haven West.
I did, however, once write about them in an article about places with good takeaways in South Jersey.
I remember thinking at the time that it seemed like they had a good thing going for themselves. This family had their own business and people seemed to like their food.
Cluck ‘n Crabs opened in 2018 and had a reputation for making tasty chicken wings and great clam chowder.
Their smoked Manhattan clam chowder won the LBI Chowferfest Grand Champion of 2020.
Amy Costa told the Asbury Park Press at the time: “My husband John, who is the chef, says the secret ingredient is love.”
I remember reading this and thinking I would really like to try John’s soup. I decided to follow them on Facebook. Cluck ‘n Crabs has always had a positive and aggressive social media marketing approach that led you to believe they were doing good business and making a good living.
One day I thought, I’ll go there and stop and try this chowder.
On Tuesday, there was a different post from Amy and John on the Cluck’n Crabs Facebook page.
It is with great sadness that we announce that Cluck’n Crabs will be closing its doors as of today 9/20. With rising food prices and an extremely tough economic market, we simply can’t keep going. We would like to thank all of our wonderful customers and employees over the past 4 years and will truly appreciate all the friends we have made along the way.
Guess I’m not going to try this clam chowder after all.
This wave of small business closures lately is troubling and sad. Here’s a family that just couldn’t make it work anymore. After four years of activity, they could no longer continue to grow.
