Proposed ‘assisted living’ plan for Burslem pub
A vacant pub could be converted into supported accommodation for victims of domestic violence. If the plans are adopted by Stoke-on-Trent City Council, The White Hart in Burslem could provide 16 bedrooms.
The provider would be the Lotus Sanctuary Community Benefit Corporation. A design and access statement submitted as part of the application stated: “We operate a portfolio of over 1,000 supported housing units across the UK, housing men and women from rough, domestic violence/abuse and criminal behavior.
“We work with our residents with the goal of empowering them to maintain their own rental. We offer stays of up to two years, during which we equip our residents with the skills to live independently.

“The site manager will be on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They will be available day and night to meet any ongoing resident support needs.
“We provide each resident with three hours of support each, given that the building has an additional 90 hours of staff presence. Additionally, we will have a nighttime security presence in the building between 9:00 p.m. and 9:00 a.m.
“Access to the building will be through a secure entrance hall, which will be monitored naturally from the staff office. There will be a window located in the wall separating the office and the hall, so that people entering the building can be monitored.
“The proposed private and community accommodation has been created with a feeling of quality and space for future residents, the floor areas for bedrooms are above minimum standards. All bedrooms are located on the exterior sides of the building to benefit mainly from natural light and all have been fitted with en-suite bathrooms, making it impossible to share bathrooms.
“Residents of the establishment will have access to two communal kitchens located on the ground floor. There is also a large communal dining and lounge area, where residents can eat and socialize.
The project will now be reviewed by the local authority.
